A Voice for the Voiceless.

Our Story

Since 2009, the Justice Studies Department has served as the institutional home for the Stateville Speaks project, comprising the publication of a newsletter written by and for incarcerated individuals in the state of Illinois.

The newsletter serves as a voice for the voiceless—for those incarcerated in Illinois, by publishing their essays, letters, and artwork. It also disseminates critical information about legislation and policies that affect people inside.

Since that time, the Justice Studies department has integrated the paper into our course work as an approved internship placement for Justice Studies majors.

Editorial Team

Stateville Speaks Interns

The newsletter is compiled by an editorial team outside of NEIU. Interns are involved in important aspects of the operations and administration of the project.

Most importantly, interns handle correspondence with subscribers, who write to the newsletter with materials for publication, asking for referrals for legal help, and other purposes. Interns also maintain accurate records of subscribers, and do the mailing of the newsletter to 2500+ subscribers.

Interns who are interested have the option and opportunity to contribute to researching and writing a piece for the newsletter.
